At gamegiants we love to tell our readers about unique games that we really enjoy! Whether it is a free flash game found on the our arcade or one of our download and play games for PC or Mac. Plants vs Zombies is one such game.

Plants vs Zombies can be best described as a simplified tower defense game. In most tower defense games you build towers that attack passing units or “creeps” as they follow a winding path off the screen. The goal of these games is to destroy the creeps before they exit the screen. The games can be pretty involved. You must carefully decided where to place your towers taking many factors into account such as: unit range, strength, rate of fire etc. You also must factor in the towers cost and the ability to upgrade the unit.

After your initial units are placed in a typical tower defense game things can be hectic. You must constantly decide where to place new units, when to upgrade, how to upgrade, and how to prevent the creeps from exiting the board. They can be somewhat stressful at the very least!

One thing most casual gamers like about playing casual games is the lack of stress and the small amount of deep strategy involved! Plants vs Zombies is basically a tower defense without the deep planning and high stress. This is great for those who just like to relax while playing and it makes this game accessible and enjoyable to younger gamers.

In Plants vs Zombies you are a homeowner who must protect his home from a Zombie attack. We use the term “Zombie” somewhat loosely as these guys are actually kind of cute! Nevertheless, you must fight them off with the weapons at hand, your garden plants.

You would never have guessed that sunflowers, pea “shooter” plants and “wall nuts” would be so good at beating down a Zombie Army! The plants are your “towers” and you place them between your house and the Zombie army as they advance toward your house. Placement of your plants is easy compared to the typical tower defense game as your yard is divided into a grid. Each square in the grid can contain one plant.

The Zombies’ “paths” are also simplified as the Zombies move in the rows of the grid from right to left toward your house. Your plants,  those which can attack, attack the Zombies in the same row as they are in. To keep the game simple there are no upgrades and to purchase new units you use a simple point system. These points are accumulated by collecting sun produced by sunflowers, sun mushrooms and from those directly from the sun which randomly fall from the sky.

The game proceeds in levels and at the end of each you receive a new type of plant to help you combat the next wave of Zombies. Each plant brings it’s own ability to aid in the fight. The Zombies also develop new units and abilities over time. Watch out for the Pole Vaulting Zombie, Newspaper Reader and the Bucket Head!

Plant vs Zombies is great fun. Our only complaint is that it could be a bit more challenging, the Zombies are pretty easy to beat. However, as we mentioned before, the low stress level is also one of the attractions of the game. It also makes this game a perfect game to play along with one of your children! Even if it is somewhat easy to play you will not lose interest in the game as you are always given new units to try, new challenges such as playing at night, and new Zombies to defeat.

The game also has several mini games such as Zombie Bowling and an all out Zombie Rush mini game which also will keep you at the keyboard! The in game narrator, your neighbor,  Crazy Dave is also always there with advice and some Zombie fighting tools he will sell you for a price.
