With the Media Pie Shrinking Will Apple Swallow Bigfish?

Posted by admin on January 25, 2010 under Game Giants | Be the First to Comment

It seems that there will be only three media companies left in the years to come Google, Amazon and Apple . You will only have the choice to purchase your media be it news, music, movies or games from one of these three companies. You will also only be able to view, listen or play the content you purchase on the proprietary platform from that vendor. Your choices for hardware will be Google’s ChromeOS, , Amazon’s Kindle or Apple’s Tablet. The marketplace is forcing these device to evolve into full fledged video and gaming devices. Who will provide the gaming content for them? Will Apple announce a new partner this week with the unveiling of it’s tablet? We think it will be casual game studio and distributor Big Fish Games.

Google, Amazon and Apple are grabbing the remaining slices of the media pie. Google for instance has been avidly grabbing content be it news, print or video. Google first raided the libraries and grabbed as many of the books as it could. All that has been or will be printed resides or will reside on a Google Books server. For video Google has Youtube as well, but never has found a way to monetize it. Google every once in a while states it intends to bring movie rental onto YouTube. Recently they have again made such a statement. These statements come and go, but the potential to provide content that people would pay for is there. Google also recently attempted to provide music through online provider Lala. Unfortunately, before the relationship could develop Apple swept in and purchased the company right under Google’s nose. Google has never really made a move into gaming yet. That most likely will change .

Amazon also has been moving to grab the pieces of the pie before they disappear. They have always been a vendor of hard copy books. Their purchasing might has allowed them to muscle publishers into the digital distribution of their print media on Amazon’s own Kindle platform. Amazon also has a Video on Demand service and a music download service AmazonMP3.

Amazon has aggressively moved into gaming. Recently they purchased the casual game studio and distributor Reflexive. Reflexive now powers Amazon’s PC Game Download site which distributes both casual and hardcore download and play pc games. We believe the purchase of Reflexive was to bring gaming to a future color version of Kindle. Reflexive brings the distribution system, industry experience and know how to bring gaming to Kindle, not forgetting to mention a full blown gaming studio as well! Soon after purchasing Reflexive, Amazon cut casual pc game pricing to barebones to a level more competitive with Apple’s existing iPhone games. The first shot in a coming gaming war with Apple.

Apple has the most extensive collection of music and video in iTunes. In music they are the undisputed leader. Apple also produces beautiful hardware be it iphone, Mac or the coming tablet. What they really bring together is a whole package video, music, hardware all tied into a simple and elegant iTunes/Appstore distribution system. But what they lack on their larger computers is games.

With all the rumors and hype about Apple finally making it’s big move into gaming with the launch of it’s tablet on Wednesday we are going out on a limb with our own prediction. As Amazon did with Reflexive, Apple will do with casual game leader Bigfish Games. We are guessing Apple will acquire the gaming studio and distributor to provide and create content for Apple’s yet to be announced device. Bigfish will bring the casual gaming content, industry knowledge and the international distribution system for casual games that will augment the existing iTunes/Appstore. The acquisition will also give Apple the leg up over Kindle in gaming.

The next move is left to Google……….
