It has been awhile since we posted a free flash game here on the Game Giants Blog. The lack of free flash games does not signal an end to our goal of providing a guide to finding the “Best Free Flash and Casual Games” on the net, nor have we stopped scouring the net playing free flash games. The reason we have not posted many flash games recently, as we discussed in a previous post, is simple: The quality of free flash games has taken a turn for the worse. We do not expect this trend to change anytime soon, but we will continue to evaluate the free flash games. When we find a gem of a game we will surely post it!

An example of one of these rare gems is the free flash puzzle game Trains. In Trains your goal is fairly simple, assemble a train of various engines and cars and direct it to a station. Although the concept is simple on each level you are faced with a number of variables and obstacles that create the puzzles.

Each level of Trains presents a unique set of engines, cars, switches and track layouts all with different attributes. In some levels engines can move in two directions, in other levels the engines can only proceed in one direction. In some levels you must repair broken track before your train may pass the damaged area. In this case you must use the track repair car to do this. In some levels you need to use switching stations to rearrange car order, defense cars to fight rebels, reversing platforms to turn engines around….  You get the idea. The variety is the greatest thing about this game and every level is truly unique. There seems to be a limitless number of new cars, switches, buildings and hazards in the puzzle.

Although the solutions are complex, the game is also very forgiving. You may find yourself failing several times trying to solve a given level, but eventually you will arrive at a solution. There is no real time limit on levels so you can use your full mental powers to derive solutions as well. The game provides buttons to speed up the game, slow it down or reset a level. All of these tools really enhance game play by reducing the chance of getting stuck on a level or at least minimizing the pain when you do get stuck.

Burger Shop 2 has been one of the best selling casual games of this year. It is one of the most enjoyable, fastest pace time management games we have ever played! The goal of the game is simple, just fill your customers orders quickly and accurately! You do this by assembling the orders from food items that are sent to you on a conveyor belt. Some items only have to be placed on a plate, other items must be cooked filled or combined with other ingredients before they are presented to the customer.

The game starts out easy and gradually the difficulty and speed increase as you increase in skill. The in game tutorials are great! Not only do they train you but they also provide additional hints and shortcuts to make sure you perform at your best! Burger Shop 2  is also available in a download and play versions with better graphics and sound for both Mac and PC.

If you play match 3 games you most likely have played and enjoyed the Fishdom games. In the games you try to match 3 like tiles in a row as in other Match 3 titles. The Fishdom games expand on the typical match 3 game by adding a campaign element to the game. The goal of the campaign game is to develop a fish tank which meets three goals: You must have fish, your fish should be happy and comfortable in your tank and your tank should be beautiful! You accomplish these goals by buying fish and accessories for your tank. By successful completing levels in the match 3 game you earn money to purchase these items.

The developer of Fishdom releases new versions of the game periodically, and usually around holidays with holiday themes. As you probably have guessed Frosty Splash is a Christmas themed game. The Secret of Margrave Manor was the first hidden object game we ever posted on the Game Giants Arcade. For the most part we are not great fans of hidden object games, but they do have a large following in the casual gaming community. In fact we do not like playing most of the hidden object games out there! There just are too many mass produced, slapped together, frustrating, impossible to solve hidden object games floating around.

The Margrave games are better than those other games. The Margrave games move quickly, the controls are straight forward, and the hidden objects for the most part are findable and identifiable. The hint system works well, and provides an adequate number of hints. And if you truly get stuck, the game shows mercy and does provide extra hints to get you moving again! Another little bonus is that the cut scenes are easy to skip with just a mouse click. For us we play a game to play the game, not for the story line…. All in all we welcome the arrival of this sequel to the original Margrave Manor.

There are some great free casual games up on dressuprose.com. Just posted today is the hidden object favorite Fishdom H2O: Hidden Odyssey. In the game you dive under the sea to find hidden objects so that you can afford to have an expensive salt water aquarium at home! Buy fish, plants and accessories for your tank with the money you earn from your dives. The game offers hours of hidden object fun, a timed and relaxed mode and tons of exciting mini games. Ok right off the bat we admit from the screenshot you might be saying to yourself that this can’t be a decent game. Well read our little review and play a little bit before you decide……

This summer has been a real disappointment for casual games in general. It is not that there has not been any games released, there have been plenty of games. Plenty of really, really Bad Games! As you know our goal on gamegiants is to shield our followers from the free games that have poor gameplay, revisit tired genres or just plain don’t function! It seems that developers just don’t do any QA anymore and find it more important just to churn out multiple non functioning, poorly thought out, copies of someone elses games. In short, they are producing CRAP!

It is easy to understand why. Developers get paid for games mainly in two ways license fees paid by portals and by ad views. This is a terrible revenue model and really leads to poor games. Right now there are an endless number of portals bidding to license games. You would think they would only pay for quality but that is not the case. The portal owners want the coveted “Play More Games” link back to their site in the game. That is what they are really paying for. If the game sucks so be it. If the game sucks the player may even be more likely to click the “escape” link and head over to the linked portal. Traffic to the portal means $$$. So crappy games get sponsored by portals.

The other revenue source is from ads. The ads are supplied by the real money maker in the whole industry. The middleman. He provides the pre-roll and in-game ads to the developer but the developer only gets a small portion of the revenue. In reality a very very small amount per game view. When a new game is posted on a portal it usually will be played while it is on the front page. Players will start the game, watch the ad and then play it to see if it is any good and if they may replay it. The majority of views happen at this time for most games. So again it is to the developers advantage to churn out quantity, instead of quality. More games means more initial clicks and more ad revenue.

The developer of Push, The Casual Collective, has resisted the urge to produce large quantities of worthless games merely to  increase cash flow. They have produced many quality games such as Buggle Stars , The Space Game , and  Desktop Tower Defense which we have featured here on gamegiants.net.

Push is a platformer. Your goal is simple. Get your little grey pixel guy to the yellow box. Your character’s movement is controlled by the arrow keys and jumps are made with the space bar.  So what is innovative about this? As you see in the screenshot above there is no clear path of moves and jumps from your starting position to the goal. This is where the “Push” comes in. Holding the left mouse button down produces a force bubble that repels the green bricks and even the yellow goal. The longer the mouse button is held the larger the bubble. While the button is held you can move your character into the gaps formed by the bubble or jump onto one of the tiles in it’s new position. When the button is released the force bubble slowly collapses and the bricks return to their original positions. If you jumped onto a brick, you will move with it to it’s new position. This opens up endless solutions to each level. There is no true “right” path that needs to be followed.

The game comes with many extras. Three difficulties of levels, an editor to create your own games and the ability to play levels created by other users. All in all a well thought out polished product. Push is the kind of innovative game that we love to see! Support The Casual Collective and quality free Flash games by playing Push!

In many cases there are games that fall into certain tired old genres that we just won’t include in our arcade or review on our blog. Some of these genres include Asteriod like games, collision avoidance games, and Tetris games. These games have been done a thousand times in Flash and in most cases fail to even live up to the originals produced in the late 70′s and early 80′s. The  Space Invaders, Galaga, Galaxian games are another we tend to avoid. These game follow a simple formula. Aliens descend from the sky dropping bombs in an effort to destroy you and your bases. Your goal is to protect yourself and your bases. We all know what to expect from these games. A-BOT falls into this category of game but it truly brings some fresh new life into the genre.

The developer of A-BOT clearly spent some time designing and planning his game. He took each element of the genre and built on it. For instance, you have the aliens. Instead of just appearing on the screen from nowhere, the aliens start the game lurking in the background and slowly reveal themselves before launching their attacks. Occasionally they retreat back into the distance before attacking again. This is a subtle change from the formula but it really adds to the gameplay.

The aliens also have a varying arsenal of attacks which keep you on your toes. They will attack your bot with everything from guided green glowing homing bombs which slowly track you and your infrastructure down, to straight forward giant blue energy blasts launched directly at your bot. Be ready they will even attempt to grapple your bot in physical charges.

Instead of destroying your bot outright and causing you to loose a one of a given number of “lives”, the aliens slowly inflict damage on you and your base infrastructure. It is quite a feat to fight one armed  after the other arm has been blown off! The progressive damage works really well in this game. After each level you have the opportunity to use funds gained in the previous level to repair damage. You also use the funds to purchase additional weapons. You quickly find that you never have enough funds!

Your bot uses a number of weapons to fight off the aliens. Your plasma cannons launch balls of plasma at the aliens while your bot uses a number of energy weapons to shoot down the aliens. The A-BOTs remind us of the swinging armed APUs from the Matrix movies especially when firing. By moving your mouse forward and backwards you control the angle between the arms of your bot. This allows you to not only fire straight up but to fire in different directions by opening your arms or to concentrate your fire on a given point by closing your arms.

We really have grown to like this game! Even after hours of play you keep discovering new aspects to it. It is great to see a developer taking an old formula and using his own creativity to expand and create something that is truly fresh and new!
